Study shows Puritan’s foam swabs provide superior influenza detection

A recent study conducted by Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio has concluded that Puritan's foam swabs outperform flocked swabs for detecting influenza. The study compared the clinical sensitivity and specifity of anterior nares specimens collected by a Puritan polyurethane foam swab vs. a nylon flocked swab. Samples of specimen were taken during the 2006-2007 and 2007-2008 influenza seasons. Results showed that Puritan's high-absorbency foam swabs allowed a larger sample of reliable specimen to be collected using the Quidel QuickVue Influenza Test A & B.

Mini-Popule maximizes DNA recovery

As published in Forensic Magazine’s February/March 2008 issue, our new mini-popule (25-4660) boosts recovery of trace DNA with its foam head and 91% isopropanol solution inside its hollow shaft. And, it reduces the chance of contamination due to not having to add sterile water as well as an easily detachable head. Better yet, because it’s a one-stop sampling device it’s easy to use in the field. Plus, as Ted Silenieks of the Forensic Science South Australia Biology Lab stated, “Crime Scene Investigators are often amazed at our ability to generate DNA profiles from popule samples taken from similar items that, from their past experience, never produced DNA results using cotton swabbing methods.”

New ESD Swabs for use in microelectronics and critical environments

For those of you interested in cleaning small, confined spaces in microelectronics or other critical environments, we’ve developed electro static dissipative swabs in five of our most popular, critical-environment styles. The new products, an extension of the PurSwab line, feature ESD safe polypropylene handles, and include dissipative foam and ultra clean microfiber-tipped applicators in both three- and six-inch lengths. “Our development of these specialty swabs was driven by customer demand for a safe swab to use in electronic assembly for production of a wide range of critical, industrial and medical devices,” said Timothy Templet, executive vice president of sales. “While appropriate for many environments and uses, our ESD Safe Swabs also meet the most stringent criteria for use in critical environments.” To learn more about our ESD Swabs, click here

25-1506 1PF TT Swab selected by California Fuel Cell Partnership

Product Image

Members of the California Fuel Cell Partnership have been
collaborating with the American Society of Testing and Materials to  determine a method for the collection of accumulated particulate  matter in a broad range of systems. After careful testing, Puritan's foam-tipped 25-1506 1PF TT was found to collect and distribute a maximum amount of particulates, more so than any other swab tested. Additionally, with its sterile, rigid tube, the swab is transported with minimum contamination.

Huby SwabOur new, HUBY® lint-free swab features larger tips

Our new HUBY swab, product 893-PC DBL, is specifically designed to meet the needs of those working in critical environments. This swab has two lint-free tips, one on either end, and they’re a larger size so they work harder than ever. The new HUBY is low in NVRs and has an environmentally friendly paper shaft.

Puritan became a distributor of SANYO Co.’s HUBY swabs in 2005. Each applicator in the HUBY line is ideal for cleaning lint-sensitive components that require precise, pristine cleaning applicators, such as disk drives, PC board assembly, optics, and other critical products. Featuring highly absorbent cotton tips ranging in size from 2mm to 5mm, HUBY swabs come in a variety of head style, most with anti-static packaging.

“This recent addition to the HUBY line resulted from conversations with people working in the field,” said Timothy Templet, Executive Vice President, Global Sales and Marketing. “Since Puritan is the authorized U.S. distributor of HUBY swabs, buyers can be assured that we have a ready inventory of these products to meet their needs.”

A contaminant-free cuticle stick for forensic use

Every precaution has been taken to keep our new cuticle stick, product 2911, contaminant-free: It’s manufactured in a controlled environment to minimize contact during production, then aseptically packaged so the user doesn’t have to handle unwrapped sticks. Transparent wrapping on the back of the stick allows for easy identification of the product being used.

2911

“We have done our utmost to ensure that our new cuticle stick remains contaminant-free from the factory to the field,” said Timothy Templet, Executive Vice President, Global Sales and Marketing. “We believe this product will prove invaluable for forensic evidence and specimen collection.”

Easily clean fiber-optic wires and cables with our new PurSwab Popule®

Thanks to its unique split foam tip, the fiber-optic Popule allows both sides of a cable to be cleaned simultaneously. The PurSwab fiber-optic Popule comes prefilled with 99% isopropyl alcohol. To release the fluid into the foam tip, the user simply squeezes the handle between thumb and forefinger. Because the fluid is contained in the handle, there is never a problem with dripping, spilled bottles, or cross-contamination.

This is just the latest in the PurSwab line of Popule applicators. All Popules combine applicator and solution in one convenient swab. Each comes prefilled with a solvent, antiseptic or custom solution.

“This latest addition to the Popule line, developed for those working with fiber-optic cable in critical environments, is unlike any other applicator on the market,” said Timothy Templet, Puritan Medical Products Company Executive Vice President, Global Sales and Marketing. “We’ve gotten tremendous feedback and will continue designing applicators that meet the needs of our customers, just as we have since 1919.”

PurSwab line expanded for those working in critical environments
Check out our special fiber-optic applicators, which feature tips made of soft, finely woven, lint-free microfiber cloth that is low in NVRs. The seamless, twisted pole tip is thermally affixed to the shaft without contaminating adhesives, and the shaft can be spun during the cleaning process so it works exceptionally well for trapping particles. The microfiber’s superior absorption qualities make this applicator ideally suited for cleaning lenses and optics. And it can be used dry or with solvents.

What’s more, non-abrasive, lint-free polyester-tipped PurSwab applicators provide good wear-resistance and can be used with deionized water, isopropyl alcohol, and solvents. The laundered polyester is low in NVRs. Particle generation is extremely low due to the folded tip construction, eliminating seams.

Looking for more specialty applicators? Try our soft, foam-tipped PurSwab applicators featuring reticulated open cells for superior particle entrapment. Many styles are thermally bonded to the shaft, using no contaminating adhesives. New glass-filled polypropylene handles provide extra rigidity.

Puritan plans to continue growing the PurSwab line with critical environment applicators, according to Timothy Templet, Puritan Medical Products Company Executive Vice President, Global Sales and Marketing. “We are in touch with those working in critical environments, and we’re going to continue to develop and provide swabs that meet their demanding requirements. As North America’s largest manufacturer of specialty-tip applicators, we can guarantee that PurSwab applicators, like all of our products, are produced to exacting standards. Our reputation for excellence is backed by ISO 9001:2000 and ISO 13485:2003 certification, and all of our medical products are CE marked.”
