We are pleased to offer flocked nylon options as part of our extensive line of diagnostic and specimen collection swabs.
as always, puritan responds to market need with high quality products that perform consistently
H1N1 is in the news and has been for some time. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend clinicians test suspected cases of H1N1, novel influenza A, by obtaining an upper respiratory specimen. According to the Interim Guidance on Specimen Collection, the preferred respiratory specimens are nasopharyngeal swabs, nasal aspirates, or a combined nasopharyngeal swab with oropharyngeal swab. Specimen swabs should have synthetic tips and an aluminum or plastic shaft. (Swabs with cotton tips and wooden shafts are not recommended for upper respiratory sample collection.)
Puritan has always been on the forefront of specialty diagnostic swabs. The healthcare industry counts on us for nasopharyngeal and oropharyngeal swabs with synthetic tips. (Of course, we’re also known for diagnostic innovations such as our CapShure swab/transport tube.)
When your specimen collection calls for a flocked tip, we have three styles to choose from. Each is available sterile or non-sterile. For specific product details, click on one of the three Nylon Flocked Swab links here.
Why Puritan?
We are not the only company that offers a nylon flocked swab. But we are the company that is known in diagnostic markets for the most consistent high quality — repeatable results — and dependable availability. When it comes to H1N1 or any other respiratory virus, consistency and dependability are of the utmost importance. And that is what Puritan is known for.
Why Puritan Flocked Swabs?
Although nylon flock is most commonly used, different flock materials are available to achieve an array of results. Puritan’s proprietary manufacturing process allows flock fibers to be fully integrated with the shaft. There are no heavy adhesives to interfere with the bonding process.
Puritan offers many handle configurations. These include molded handles with pre-determined or multiple/optional break points — and extruded handles for solution flow through the shaft. Breakable shafts are available with Puritan’s state-of-the art scoring with printed marks that easily show your break point options. (Please see photo.)
the benefits of flocked nylon swabs
The tip: Think of flocked nylon as a velvet-like brush. Its fibers are precisely placed around the tip of the solid handle. There is no inner fabric or adhesive core to re-absorb the specimen. Every bit of specimen is trapped by and retained in the flocked nylon fibers.
The same benefit holds true in the lab. You get rapid elution of the sample into your liquid media. The “webbing” of the flock releases the specimen more readily than a traditional material might. This is especially important when you’re dealing with the sampling of small or elusive specimen particles.
